DIY Custom Painted Shirt/Top With A Rose
I wanted to share a top , that my friend painted for me. I really wanted to get something different and to test Tulip Slick Fabric dye. I had in mind a top or shirt with a rose on it. I researched a lot of pictures of roses and I picked one. But... I couldn't print the picture , because I wanted it to be pretty big, so I asked a friend of mine, who is an artist to drew it for me. I'll be honest-it took a while. He did not draw the exact same rose, he changed it a little, but now I like it even better. It turned out great!
Here is what we used:
A white T-shirt or a tank top. (I got a Mossimo top at Target)
A pencil, preferably 2B or 4B ,the softer, the easier to outline your drawing
An image you'd like to draw
Black and white fabric paint (I used Tulip Slick)
Water
Brushes-you'll need thick and thin ones
I recommend washing and drying the top before drawing . This way the dye will hold better.
Start drawing the image with a pencil. Once done - draw it with the fabric paint. (Easy to say... I am terrible at drawing, thanks to my friend who did everything form me). I couldn't find any information if I can dilute Tulip dye with water. Also I wondered if the quality of the color will change if diluted. We decided to take the risk and use water to dilute the paint, so the image doesn't get too textured. The instructions on the tube state to use the thin tip and draw directly on the fabric. We needed more precise lines , that's why we used different brushes. We only used black and white paint. It took a couple of days, 3-4 hours each day to finish the project. Then you should wait 72 hours for the fabric paint to get permanent. I washed the top in less than 72 hours. It looked perfect, there was no change to the color of the drawing. Then I added some clear 4mm rhinestones. My idea was to make them look like dew drops :)
That's all! It takes a while, but the final result is worth the effort. Remember you can create different designs and effects using fabric dye.
